This project included reconstruction of one mile of roadway as a 4-lane urban section. The existing roadway has a combination of two-lane rural and two- to four-lane urban cross sections. The existing roadway has two signalized intersections, both of which are entrances to Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC), which operates a truck driving school. About 7,700 students attend FVTC each year.

An evaluation was completed of both roundabouts and signalized intersections at the FVTC entrances. Both options were brought forward to a public information meeting. OMNNI Associates used a model of the roundabout with cars and trucks to help educate FVTC truck driving representatives on how trucks would navigate through the roundabouts. The decision was made to move ahead with roundabouts at both intersections.

OMNNI’s survey staff provided construction staking of the two roundabouts including slope intercept, storm sewer, subgrade, and curb and gutter staking along the entire corridor.

The OMNNI-designed roadway transformed the existing two-lane, rural roadway with signalized intersections into an urban, four-lane roadway with roundabouts at the entrances to the college. The design minimized impact to adjacent properties and improved overall capacity of the corridor.
