Geotechnical and Environmental Testing

Fox Cities Exhibition Center, Appleton, Wisconsin

OMNNI provided geotechnical engineering services for the City of Appleton and their design consultants for the design and construction of the new Fox Cities Exhibition Center located on the site of a former middle school and along a ravine. Responsibilities included coordinating the geotechnical exploration program for the new facility, coordinating the site exploration, providing laboratory testing, and preparing a report addressing design and construction parameters for the new structure.

Project highlights included design recommendations for deep foundations and also high contact pressure shallow foundations requiring in place pressure-meter testing, deep existing site fills, potential soil contamination, recommendations for design and construction of temporary and permanent deep retaining structures, corrosive soil considerations, and slope stability considerations.

Environmental services included soil and water investigation prior to construction to develop options for handling contaminated media. Prepared a Post Closure Modification application to the DNR outlining proposed construction and site changes. Prepared a Soil and Waste Contingency Plan that included a Low Hazard Waste Grant of Exemption application. The Low Hazard Waste Grant of Exemption allowed low-level contaminated soils to be placed at another City-owned property saving the project over $2 Million in landfill tipping fees. Screened soils throughout the construction process allowing the segregation of soils requiring additional study to be removed from the construction site.

OMNNI also provided geotechnical services for the adjacent Jones Park redevelopment including soil borings for slope investigation, a stormwater detention pond, building shelter and stage area.
